Introduction to Section 498A
In our Indian Legal System, there is a specific provision which protects the married women from the cruelty of husband or her in-laws. This provision is section 498A of Indian Penal Code (IPC). What Constitutes Cruelty Under Section 498A?
Section 498A defines cruelty as:
- Any willful conduct that is likely to drive a woman to suicide or cause grave injury or danger to life, limb, or health (physical or mental).
- Harassment with the intention of coercing her or her relatives to meet unlawful demands for property or valuable security.
